The Battle Hymn of The Republic

Blessed Birthday, United States of America!

The “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” also known as “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” outside of the United States, is a song with a rich and fascinating history. It was written during a turbulent time in American history, the Civil War, and has since become an enduring symbol of American patriotism.

The History of the Song

The song was written by Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist writer, in 1861. Howe was deeply anguished by the growing conflict between the Northern and Southern states. During a visit to an army camp near Washington, D.C., she heard soldiers singing “John Brown’s Body,” a song about a man who had been hanged in his efforts to free the slaves.

Inspired by the tune but feeling that it deserved better words, Howe set about writing her own lyrics. She "scrawled the verses almost without looking at the paper." The result was a powerful and moving hymn that linked the Union cause with God’s vengeance at the Day of Judgment.

Publication and Reception

Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic” was first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song quickly caught on and became the semi-official Civil War song of the Union Army. Howe’s stirring lyrics and the catchy tune made the song a favorite among the troops and helped to boost morale.

The song also found favor with President Abraham Lincoln. At a large rally, after the song was sung as a solo and the audience responded with loud applause, Lincoln, with tears in his eyes, cried out, "Sing it again!"

The Song’s Legacy

More than a century later, the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” remains one of America’s most iconic patriotic songs. Its powerful lyrics continue to inspire and its melody is instantly recognizable. The song is a testament to the enduring power of music and the role it can play in shaping and reflecting historical events, such as the sacrifice many have made for the United States.

The “Battle Hymn of the Republic” is more than just a song. It is a piece of American history, a symbol of a nation’s struggle for unity and freedom, and a testament to the power of faith in Christ and America’s endurance.
