INDEPENDENCE DAY: Liberty in His Name

STEPEHEN PHINNEY: If Independence yields to grace, His holiness will guard this place. Blessed Independence Day.

LIBERTY IN HIS NAME

True Liberty Is Found in the Name of Yeshua.

In a nation that equates liberty with autonomy and self-expression, Scripture offers a radically different definition: true liberty is found in surrender to Yeshua, the Messiah. His name—Yeshua, meaning “salvation”—is not merely a title but a declaration of divine rescue from the bondage of sin, fear, and death.

Freedom from Sin, Not Freedom to Sin.

Yeshua declared, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). This freedom is not a license to indulge the flesh, but a liberation from its tyranny. Paul shouts this out in Romans 6:22:

“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.”

True liberty is not found in doing whatever we please—it’s found in doing what pleases God, empowered by His Spirit.

The Law of Liberty.

James calls the Word of God the “perfect law of liberty” (James 1:25), revealing that obedience to Yeshua is not restrictive—it’s restorative. His commands are not burdensome (1 John 5:3); they are the pathway to peace, purpose, and purity.

Liberty Through the Spirit.

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:17:

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

This freedom is not external—it’s internal through His indwelling Life. It’s the Spirit of Yeshua dwelling within, breaking chains of shame, addiction, and despair.

The Cross: Liberty’s Gate

The cross is the ultimate paradox: a place of death that births life, a symbol of suffering that secures freedom. Through Yeshua’s sacrifice, we are no longer slaves to the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2). We are adopted, redeemed, and released.

To invoke the name of Yeshua is to call upon the One who liberates the soul. His name is not just a theological concept—it is the key that unlocks the prison doors of the heart/soul. In Him, we find freedom not just from something, but for something: to walk in righteousness, to love without fear, and to live as citizens of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Lyrics to our new song:

"Liberty in His Name"

By Stephen Phinney | Vocalist Tony Townshed.

(Verse 1)

On the fields of freedom, banners rise,

But hearts still bound in silent cries.

Let not this day be just a spark,

If the Word is absent from our hearts.

(Pre-Chorus)

He gave us truth that sets men free,

Not just from tyrants, but sin’s decree.

The cross, not cannons, brought the flame

That lights the soul in Yeshua’s name.

(Chorus)

Yeshua defends what freedom means,

When nations bow to righteous dreams.

If Independence yields to grace,

His holiness will guard this place.

Not by strength or flag unfurled,

But by His Spirit shaking the world.

(Verse 2)

From Sinai’s fire to Calvary’s hill,

He spoke of freedom, love, and will.

The founders dreamed, but Christ fulfilled

What liberty the law could not instill.

(Bridge)

Let Scripture lead our celebration,

Truth, not pride, our firm foundation.

The Lamb who died, the King who reigns—

In Him, our liberty remains.

(Final Chorus)

Yeshua defends each sacred right

When hearts are yielded to His light.

So let our anthem rise and say:

Freedom stands when God leads the way!
