MY LIFE: #50 Human Will is The Key
Generations echo our choices. The will, like a torch passed through time, ignites revolutions, builds empires, or whispers peace to a grieving heart. Our legacy—etched by the will impacts others.
MY WILL BECAME THE KEY
For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
(Romans 8:6-8)
In the vast creation of human existence, the human will stands as a golden key—a key that unlocks our journey through the labyrinth of choices of life eternal or death by design. It is both a compass and forge, shaping our destiny to enter Heaven or Hell.
Initially, the appeal of human choice can be made through a worldly appeal or stimulating exciting possibilities through the plans of man (sin inside), moving the saved and unsaved to a decision. The mind of Christ through the Spirit within us was certainly not involved in the decisions our fleshly minds make, but needless to say, most end up following the world, their flesh, and Satan himself. Many of us continue to make these wrong choices due to our fleshly insecurities; a stronghold develops – returning the believer to sinful habits of seeking the attention, praise, and acceptance of other humans. Personally, I learned that whatever or whoever controls the will controls the person.
The diagram below reveals how the will is the key to choices after the flesh.
At birth, we inherit the spark—the primal choice to breathe, hunger, seek warmth, or demand our way. Our will awakens, and with it, the power to shape either a fleshly reality or that of God’s domain. Each decision fuels the flame, casting shadows or illuminating paths.
The human will seeks purpose—a lodestar in the world of determining the points of Truth or the disasters of lies. We chase dreams, wrestle with doubts, and carve meaning from chaos, and hopefully, discover Jesus Christ. Purpose fuels our resilience, urging us forward even when storms rage.
It would be great if all indwelt Christians would choose the TRUTH at the very moment an incident occurred in their daily lives, but that simply is not the case. When an unpleasant or sinful incident occurs, believers do not have to react after their flesh; but, instead, can respond in the Spirit by allowing Christ in them to do the responding.
When the Truth of the believer’s identity in Christ is in place prior to an incident, they are free to respond after and in the Spirit. The two choices detailed in the diagram above show us: 1) a believer’s perfect acceptance in Christ and 2) a demonstration of how Jesus actually does the responding through a believer.
As I grow up into all aspects of Him, I am learning to choose to respond in and after the Spirit while the incident is taking place. For those times when I “get it” a bit late, I am embracing true repentance, extending forgiveness, and developing a willingness to restitute relationships that seem to create these incidents and plague me from time to time. Choosing Truth is the key to the victorious, indwelt Christian life.
Right choices are made through the indwelling influence of God, through Christ in the form of the Holy Spirit – who is the Word.
God wants to influence the believer’s decisions through His Spirit bearing witness with the written Word. The believer’s job is to set their mind on the Spirit. Once that occurs, Christ is released to do the thinking, choosing, and feeling through the believer, which will perfectly match the written Word.

Setting the Will on the spiritual is key to discernment, especially in the midst of confusion and turmoil.
John 7:16–17
[16] So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. [17] If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.
God Bless you Dr Phinney. Have shared before that I'm a new Christ follower. My brain(?) tries to steer me into past ways of thinking. Seems like a battle at times. Through Christ this will subside, I pray.
